The Santa Cruz Flats count is the longest-running survey of wintering raptors in Arizona. The data showed that raptor numbers fluctuated from year to year, but no discernible trends were evident, other than a notable increase in Crested Caracara (Caracara plancus) numbers. The figures set a baseline that can be referred to in evaluating proposals that could significantly alter the habitat and wildlife at the Flats.
