This Sharp-tailed Sandpiper (Calidris acuminata) was at a dairy near Stanfield in Pinal County, 15-18 October 2023. If accepted by the Arizona Bird Committee, this report will be the ninth record for Arizona and the first for Pinal County. All records of this sandpiper in Arizona, except for one, have been in September-November. A rare visitor to North America, it breeds in northeastern and north-central Siberia and typically winters from New Guinea through Melanesia to New Caledonia, Australia, and New Zealand. The Sharp-tailed Sandpiper is distinguished from the Pectoral Sandpiper (C. melanotos), which it closely resembles in size and plumage, by its less streaked breast, rufous crown, and long, bold supercilium.
