Two Fan-tailed Warblers in Arizona, November 2022

Notes | By Carol Hippenmeyer and Torin Waters

Two Fan-tailed Warblers (Basileuterus lachrymosus) were reported in Arizona in November 2022. Although there are more than a dozen previous records of this Mexican vagrant in the United States, most of them in Arizona, these recent reports were notable. They were the first from Maricopa and Pima counties, and the most northern records for Arizona. Most previous U.S. reports have been in the spring, and these November reports were the latest in the year. Moreover, these birds were present simultaneously, also a first. This unusual situation offers an opportunity not only to describe these 2 records, but to review the history of Fan-tailed Warbler occurrence in the United States and Arizona.
